Maria Wigley

Walsall, West Midlands, U.K

My work is continuously evolving, and what drives my creative enquiry is the fascination I have with text and mark-making. I usually work by assembling different components together which informs the concept. I often use translucent fabric, working in layers. The use of layering in my art is an essential part of the construct, as I see the process much like the layering of conversations and thoughts over time. The stitched writing are my own thoughts, secrets that I keep to myself and only divulge to my sewing machine and needle. I am captivated by calligraphy, especially Japanese Shodo and asemic writing. I love the fluid nature of the characters and how they appear to dance, flow and blend.

I’m enchanted by the inner beauty of letter forms in their own right. I see them more than just letters that make up words and sentences. My embroidered art pushes ways in which these concepts can be expressed that reflect a mood or thought rather than solely to spell out words.

The aesthetics of writing is something, I feel we are losing since the computerised interface. Handwriting compared to typed text shows the individual’s marks, a much more personal assemblage to communicate thoughts and intentions.
