Caroline Kirton

Hertfordshire, U.K

My work is a series of snapshots reflecting on the ups and down of life and is intended to be a contemporary social study of today’s society.  Through observation I translate and record stories through documentary style stitched textile drawings picking up details that capture my attention.  My work always starts with a comment or observation, which strikes a poignant cord. My objective is for my work always to be a sensitive and thoughtful process.

My work, is designed to arouse discussion and invite interaction with the audience whilst also showing the importance of family life and the importance of building relationships through the generations.  The intention in my practice when using traditional methods such as silk-screen printing, appliqué and embroidery is to demonstrate to the viewer the importance of making and materials and how they have significant place in contemporary art today.

My work starts with collecting photographic images of subjects that interest me.  Once I have selected the image I’m going to use, I then make a series of drawings that become templates to work from.  At this stage I use a range of techniques which include free machine embroidery, appliqué, print and mixed media. I like to use vintage or recycled fabrics in my work.
