Niki Chandler

Cambridge, UK

I make large scale contemplative contemporary wall quilts, hand embroideries and fine art prints in subtle colour palettes. My visual aesthetic is inspired by the Japanese sensibility of life, art and craft.

I am captivated by the interplay of light on surface; of sunlight dancing, quiet sensations of beauty and intrigue – the shadow as transient time, capturing a moment of illumination: the non- visible made momentarily tangible. Through personal experience in recent years my work has become focused on aspects of mortality, the evanescence of life and how I can commemorate those who have passed on.

A former life in theatrical production design has influenced my preferred palette of dance nets and light reflective materials in the execution of my pieces. My printmaking practice investigates the potential of textiles as a drawing medium and informs my stitched artworks.  A diverse range of techniques are employed in the execution of my quilts including hand and machine stitch and various printing techniques.

My work has been exhibited both in the U.K. and Europe and is held in the collection of the Quilters Guild of the British Isles.

I am a fully qualified tutor.
