Maria Walker

London, U.K

My fine art practice is centred around my interest in embodiment and the unique experiences and concerns  of being human. I explore they human body and everyday life through abstract sculptural work and installations made from a wide variety of materials.  An engagement with materials and the process of making is an integral aspect of my practice and it is only through my body’s interaction with the materials that my ideas start to take actual form.

I have always loved working with cloth and thread due to their sensual properties and their ability to wrap around people and objects. The close relationship of cloth to the human body has long been a recurring aspect in my work especially tactile processes such as hand stitching, wrapping and binding.  More recently I have started apply textile techniques and technologies to other materials which I carefully select to create abstract sculptural forms which still reference the textile tradition.
