Deniz kurdak

London, UK

Dualities such as belonging and alienation, truth and illusion, and disconnection and longing became central themes in Deniz’s works after her dislocation. Her exploration centers around the relationship between memory and space. She finds inspiration in how familiar scents, half-remembered melodies, or objects and places from the past trigger a rush of emotions and memories. The seeking and longing for a sense of place, to belong anew or to return to known; with the age-old problem that the home will not be the same again.

Deniz is intrigued by our capacity to construct our own realities and the fluid, unreliable nature of memories. Working with textile art, she likes to reimagine the meanings of cutting, stitching, weaving, and mending by adding a concept of emotional repair and rewriting one's own stories.

Formerly an academic member of staff and a designer in theatre and film, Deniz, shifted her focus to blending her passion for needlework with her visual storytelling skills.

She has exhibited nationally and internationally, featured in art magazines, and her short animation movies have been screened in international film festivals. She also conducted workshops at universities in Switzerland, Turkey and The U.S.A.
