Barbara J West

The first few years of my art practice were devoted to achieving beauty in my work. Eventually, I realized art can be an expression of social and political issues which include aspects of my previous working life, current family experiences and comments about art and culture. While I still strive for aesthetics in my work, it has become more engaging to look at art as an avenue of discourse, which invites the viewer to dialogue.

TEXTILE PRACTICE
I am a Canadian artist exhibiting in juried exhibitions since 2000. Recently, I have challenged myself to move from two dimensional textiles to three dimensional work in knitting, stitching and experimenting with different materials. My art has been published in the United States and Canada and I have exhibited in both of these countries, as well as Japan and Europe. Several of my pieces have won national awards. I am a juried member of the Canadian Society of Artists, President of The Alberta Society of Artists and member of the Prism Textile exhibition group.
