Maria Walker

My fine art practice has developed from my interest in everyday life, narratives and the unique experience of being human. I explore aspects such as pain, memory, loss and embodiment through abstract sculptural work and installations made from a wide variety of materials. The process of making is an integral aspect of my practice as it is only through my body’s interaction with the materials that my ideas start to take actual form.

TEXTILE PRACTICE STATEMENT
I have always loved working with cloth and thread due to their sensual properties and their ability to wrap around people and objects. The close relationship of cloth to the human body has long been a recurring aspect in my practice but lately I have started apply textile techniques and technologies to other materials. I choose materials which have similar physical properties to create abstract sculptural forms which still reference the textile tradition.
