Julie Turner

Julie is a mixed media textile artist with a studio at Euroart in Tottenham. She is preoccupied with maternal deprivation and loss. Her work takes the form of faceless dolls and unwearable dresses. Recently she has been working with natural plant dyes chosen in response to the emotional meaning of the flower/ plant material. Currently, using marigolds as a symbol of despair. She also works with rust as a symbol of loss. She uses a variety of methods to change the surface texture of fabric, including plaster, wax and print. Julie incorporates stitched text to reflect meaning and is currently researching into ideas of abandonment and separation. She is interested in the experiences of Foundling children and is researching the different stitch methods taught to Foundling girls. People often have a strong emotional response to her work.
