Katharine Paton-King

My work is always at some level rooted in anthropology; driven by a need to create a visual narrative that often has a humorous twist, utilising and exaggerating juxtapositions to enhance the impact of the message. My 3D textile sculptures evolve from copious, obsessive, and frequently cathartic drawing research, through which I am constantly striving towards a purpose for my art that is beyond the purely decorative.

TEXTILE PRACTICE
I use stitch purely as a method for construction. The materials and stitches used are chosen for their suitability for the purpose; and whilst the aesthetics are important the structural potential of both is even more so. Where possible the materials used will have had a former life or purpose, taking them that crucial step away from the oppressive blank page and imbibing them with an energy that simply can only be gathered by time and experience.
