Penny Maltby

Penny’s work is concerned with the process of making and intangible cultural heritage. Materials have always been a focus; how those materials came to be, how they connect with others and how we use them. The challenge of new processes and new materials as well as collaborations with other artists adds to this mix of discovery, new contexts and connections. Thinking through making is at the core of her practice.

TEXTILE PRACTICE
With a passion for the history and narrative behind traditional textile craft, techniques and industry; Penny is interested in exploring these themes in a contemporary way, bringing them to new audiences and in new settings. An inherent pleasure in the making process; using both haptic and tacit skills and often using repetitive acts, allows her to form objects with meaning. Her work seeks to engage the viewer in the unique human experience that is derived from immersion in creative activity using the hand and basic tools.
