Catherine Gowthorpe

I lean naturally towards order and systematic thinking; I find line and geometry particularly appealing. This bias is tempered, however, by feeling and emotion which emerge in my work in colour and texture. My textile pieces are multilayered and usually densely hand-stitched and textured. Recent work uses fabrics and threads that I have dyed myself. I use a range of textile materials: silk, linen, lace, cotton, wool, and recycled fabrics, often in the same piece. My inspiration is drawn from observation of the natural world but is usually abstracted into constituent elements of shape, line, form, colour and texture.
