Rachel Crawford

With strong family connections to art and needlework and a childhood spent drawing and sewing the foundations for a life long interest in the creative arts were laid. Progressing from student to teacher in the late 1970’s Rachel has always been keen to extend her knowledge of art and textiles. Since leaving teaching ten years ago she has been able to develop her creative skills further by attending workshops, courses and exhibitions – all of which have all helped to inform her work.

Drawing and using sketchbooks are essential elements in Rachel’s textile practice. Her subject matter is varied and she works thematically - hedges, washing lines, gardens and greenhouses have all inspired – combining a variety of processes to produce interesting contemporary images. She is drawn to pattern and colour and likes to develop ideas which excite and challenge. Reluctant to stick to the same format Rachel’s experimental approach often leads to unexpected results which encourage her to move forward.
