Jo Coombes

Jo’s textile ideas stem from a deep interest in human behaviour and communication.
Drawing on her training as a speech and language therapist, she is inspired by our use of language and the written word and how this impacts on our identity, emotions, relationships and consequent social struggle in the modern world.
Exploring metaphors for our moral code and interpreting the manipulative influences of media and commerce, has been the focus of her recent work.
Jo believes that textiles can effect a powerful transformation of these issues and she hopes to share her perspectives through her work.

TEXTILE PRACTICE
Creating visual imagery to portray abstract ideas is a satisfying challenge. Jo uses her original images to print on hand-dyed cloth which has been layered and discharged to enhance the theme. She then embellishes it with hand and machine embroidery, paper lamination and appliqué to build the layers of texture and abstract meaning.
