Niki Chandler

I make contemplative contemporary wall quilts in subtle colour palettes.
I am captivated by the interplay of light on surface; of sunlight dancing, quiet sensations of beauty and intrigue – the shadow as transient time, capturing a moment of illumination: the non- visible made momentarily tangible.
My visual aesthetic is inspired by the Japanese sense of beauty and craft. Elements of traditional patchwork are referenced by the use of a single repeated motif or limited set of units to build a complete image.

TEXTILE PRACTICE
A former life in theatrical design for stage and television and years spent constructing ballet costumes has influenced my preferred palette of dance nets, iridescent plastics and all things light reflective. A diverse range of techniques are employed in the execution of my quilts including hand and machine quilting, applique and printing. Sun-resist dyeing allows me to directly embed sunlight to create a shadows form on the quilts surface. I am a fully qualified practicing art tutor and printmaker.

My work has been exhibited both in the U.K. and Europe and is held in the collection of the Quilters Guild of the British Isles.
