Ali Brown

As a child Ali was always creating things, the ‘Blue Peter’ craft item on the popular children’s television has a lot to answer for! Making and mending, improving and embellishing to achieve something unique continues to be an abiding passion along with learning new techniques and skills. Gaining a degree in Ceramics at Camberwell School of Art has been followed by continual practice, organising exhibitions and teaching both pottery and textiles, amongst other things. Her lifelong delight however is in all things fabric, reading, walking on the beach and travel for inspiration.

TEXTILE PRACTICE
Drawing is integral to Ali’s work, the simplicity of line and precise marks on paper, fabric, silver or ceramic endlessly fascinate her. Art quilts with Japanese and utility quilt influences incorporating brush and ink birds on natural linen have proved popular. She has also developed a unique needlefelting technique to scribble on heavyweight fleece using her sketches of chickens, seagulls or magpies as source material. A new venture this year has been learning to make rag rugs incorporating favourite motifs along with poems hooked into the backing fabric, a great way to use up her large stash of fabric too!
