Diana Barrett

My work explores the relationship between strength and fragility, the delicate balance between the two and how that balance shifts with the passage of time. My initial inspiration is often drawn from the local environment and contemporary concerns. I use colour and texture to stir memories of particular places and experiences.

TEXTILE PRACTICE
My textile practice is rooted in traditional hand embroidery skills such as gold work and cut work. I consider the absorbing and repetitive nature of the stitch to be an important part of the process. I create contemporary pieces by re-inventing these traditional techniques using hand stitch and free machine embroidery, often in conjunction with a scalpel and a soldering iron.
