Beverly Ayling-Smith

Beverly’s work explores the emotions of mourning and melancholia. Using materials associated with burial her work encourages a focus on the emotional dimensions inherent in the words grief, loss and absence.

TEXTILE PRACTICE
The ritualistic approaches to process and outcome as demonstrated in the making of kesa (the Japanese Buddhist robe) are an integral aspect of Beverly’s work, as are those of Japanese boro textiles, using stitch to lovingly repair by patching and mending clothes and fabrics to create garments that have their own life and soul, personal history with their own story to tell.
